UNDERSTORY — TERMS AND CONDITIONS

By submitting an application to Understory, accepting a place, making any payment, or attending an event, you agree to these terms in full.

1. What Understory Is

Understory is a curated singles introduction experience operated in Singapore. It is not a dating agency, not speed dating, and not a social mixer. Every applicant speaks personally with a retained experienced relationship counsellor before any event. The counsellor builds the cohort with care, facilitates the evening, and handles matching after.

Understory is not a counselling or therapeutic service. The intake conversation is curatorial, not clinical. Nothing in these terms or in any communication from Understory should be read as the provision of counselling, psychological, or therapeutic services.

2. Eligibility

To apply, you must be single, at least 21 years of age, a resident of Singapore or able to attend events in Singapore, and genuinely open to connection. Understory currently offers events for heterosexual pairings only.

3. Application and Selection

Submitting an application does not guarantee a place. All applications are reviewed personally by the counsellor. Understory reserves the right to accept, defer, waitlist, or decline any application at our sole discretion. We do not give reasons for decisions. This policy applies without exception — the decision is curatorial, never personal.

4. How Events Are Scheduled

Events are scheduled after a cohort is confirmed, not before. Applications remain open while a band's cohort is being built. Once the cohort is confirmed, a Saturday date is set and attendees are notified. You will be given the date before your balance payment is due.

Events run on Saturday afternoons and last approximately two hours.

5. Payments

Payment is structured in two stages.

A non-refundable deposit is due upon acceptance of your place. This is collected before the event date is confirmed. It covers the counsellor's time spent reviewing your application and conducting your intake conversation.

The balance payment is due within 48 hours of being notified of your confirmed event date. Payment must be received to hold your place.

All amounts are in Singapore Dollars (SGD). Payment instructions are provided at each relevant stage.

6. Cancellations, Withdrawals, and Refunds

Payments are non-refundable.

If you do not attend on the day without prior notice, no refund or credit is given regardless of the reason.

The only exception: if one year has elapsed since your deposit was collected and Understory has not offered you a confirmed event date or a private pairing, you are entitled to a full refund of the deposit if you choose to stop waiting. To request this refund, write to us at understory.sg@gmail.com. We will process it within 14 days of your request. If no request is made, we will continue considering you for all upcoming cohorts.

7. Event Postponement

Understory reserves the right to postpone an event if the confirmed cohort is not suitable to proceed. This is a quality decision. If postponement occurs, your payment will be held and applied to the rescheduled date. You will be notified as early as possible.

8. Event Conduct

Understory events are intentional spaces. All attendees are expected to treat other participants and the facilitator with respect throughout the evening. Photography or recording of other attendees is not permitted without explicit consent.

Understory reserves the right to ask any attendee to leave if their conduct is disruptive or disrespectful. No refund will be given in such cases.

9. No Guarantee of Outcome

Understory facilitates introductions between consenting adults. We do not guarantee romantic connection, compatibility, ongoing contact, or relationship formation. We are not responsible for the conduct of other attendees before, during, or after an event, or for decisions you make as a result of attending.

To the fullest extent permitted by Singapore law, Understory's total liability to you is limited to the amount you have paid for the specific event in question.

10. Confidentiality and Matching

Your application responses and intake conversation are read by the counsellor and are not shared with other applicants or attendees.

After each event, a private mutual interest form is sent to all attendees. Interest is only ever revealed when it is mutual. If there is no mutual match, no one is informed. If a mutual match exists, the counsellor makes a private introduction.

Our handling of personal data is governed by our Privacy Policy, available on our website, and should be read alongside these terms.

11. Marketing and Representations

Any marketing or advertising materials produced by Understory, including but not limited to website copy and Instagram content, reflect the perspective and experience of the founders and are not verified benchmarks against named third parties. Results vary by individual. Understory makes no guarantee of any specific romantic outcome.

12. Intellectual Property

All content on the Understory website belongs to Understory. You may not reproduce or distribute any part of it without written permission.

13. Governing Law

These terms are governed by the laws of Singapore. Any disputes will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Singapore courts.

14. Changes to These Terms

Understory may update these terms. The terms in effect at the time of your payment apply to that event. Updated terms apply to subsequent events.
